“Juust gott the neww Justin Bieber perfumeeee, I’m innn heavennn <3”

This was literally the status of one of my friends on Facebook. I threw up a teensy bit in my mouth while I was reading it.

Justin Beiber’s new fragrance for women, called “Someday,” comes in this girly little bottle with a big rose on the top and little charms decorating the neck. Okay, so why would Justin Beiber make a fragrance for women? Obviously because there are so many teenage girls crushing on JB and they could make a bunch of money.

Or maybe it’s because JB really wanted to help his fans as he is quoted in the press: “Let’s be real, the way a girl smells is important to a guy. I have such a deep connection with my fans, so creating a fragrance that I personally love is another way I can bring them closer to my world.” Yeah, right JB. So, now as girls we not only have to care about how we look, but also how we smell? Because it is important to guys? WOW.

If you haven’t already seen it, take a look at the commercial for the perfume. A girl sprays herself and somehow JB appears in her bedroom to kiss her, and they fly through the clouds together in a romantic twist. Ick. Not only is this telling girls that they have to smell good to be liked, but it also sends one of those messages that all they should care about is their looks to win a guy–as opposed to caring about what’s on the inside.

I mean, come on… Don’t you think it’s a bit weird that a 17-year-old guy is making this fragrance? In addition, JB will also be launching a body lotion and “hair mist.” We are stronger than this! We shouldn’t get hung up on what we look like, what we wear, and definitely not what we smell like! No matter who markets the products.

I think it’s sort of ridiculous that girls obsess over celebrities like Justin Bieber, and buy absolutely anything they sell. The “Someday” commercial is unrealistic and stupid. It makes the girl look weak and desperate. Like she has nothing better to do then sit in her bedroom and hope that a guy will fly through her window to kiss her.

Plus, the name “Someday”….what is that supposed to mean? Someday you’ll meet Justin Bieber? Someday you’ll fall in love? Someday a boy will kiss you? (If you wear this perfume, of course.) How about, Someday you’ll be in the Olympics? Or Someday you’ll star on Broadway? What about the strong, bold dreams that so many of us girls have?

I don’t know about you, but I’m thinking that this perfume sends the wrong message. Maybe soon we’ll change all the stupid ads and commercials that make girls look desperate, caring only about their appearance and having a boyfriend. Someday we’ll let the real, strong girl inside shine through. No matter what she smells like.
