Music is one of the most popular and powerful forms of media we consume.

Like poetry, music is a great way to convey the passion, pain, anger, and hope of Sexual Violence Prevention. While the examples below are broader projects, your activism through music can be as simple as a song you write with your friends, or a music video you share on social media.

Rewind & Reframe is a campaign aimed at dissecting the racism, sexism, and violence in music videos. This campaign recognizes how much power lyrics hold for their listeners, and they are creating a music industry with less sexual and racial violence.

Some music activists use explicit language in their work that is not appropriate for all ages. There are great resources online for parents or teachers who want to talk with kids about sexually violent lyrics. Check out Media Smarts, Canada’s Centre for Digital and Media Literacy for resources and tools.

Girls Against is a tumblr page of young intersectional feminists who are passionate about the power of music. Look through their page to read about ways musicians are participating in SVP.

Look for content warnings when exploring SVP music activism, and be sure to add your own warnings to any work you make public.
