HOW WAS THIS BLOG BORN?

The SPARKteam and Powered By Girl (aka: “PBG”) were born as sister organizations. PBG began as a feminist, girl-written blog and a site for culture jamming sexist ads as part of Hardy Girls Healthy Women, a fantastic organization that runs programs for girls in Waterville, Maine and served as SPARK’s fiscal sponsor (taking care of our financial business) from 2011-2016. At around the same time, SPARK was building a vibrant online and on-the-ground community of young feminist activists called the SPARKteam [link to SPARKteam page], who later developed their own blog to offer culture critique, interviews with feminist superstars, books, film & tv reviews and to publicize and push out SPARK’s action campaigns among lots of other content.

When PBG broke from Hardy Girls, it made sense to reconnect with SPARK in celebration of our relaunch. PBG now hosts our current blog, under the editorship of original SPARKteam blogger and girl activist, Yas Necati, a match made in feminist heaven!

WHO IS IN CHARGE?

pbgbio

London-based PBG editor, 18-year-old Yas Necati, joined the SPARKteam at 14 and PBG at 15. She was named a 2015 Rising Star by The Guardian for her work as a gender rights activist, advocating for better sex and relationship education in schools and campaigning for an end to topless models on page 3 of the Sun. When she’s not editing or training new bloggers, Yas is working on a book about teenage feminism.
